How to choose a hospital in India for your treatment

India has many excellent hospitals, which is good news for patients and can also make the choice feel overwhelming. These are the questions we help every patient work through.

1. Is the hospital accredited?

Look for accreditation from NABH, India’s national hospital accreditation body, or JCI, an international accreditation. Accreditation applies to a specific hospital and location, not to every hospital in a group, so check the facility you will actually be treated at.

2. Who is the specialist?

For most treatments, the doctor matters as much as the hospital. Ask about the specialist’s experience with your specific condition and procedure. A video consultation before you travel lets you meet the specialist, ask questions and understand the plan.

3. Does the hospital have what your case needs?

Complex cases may need specific facilities: a transplant unit, robotic surgery, a paediatric intensive care unit, or radiation therapy equipment. Make sure the hospital offers everything your treatment plan requires in one place.

4. Which city suits you?

Consider direct flights from your country, the climate, and whether there is a community or food you are familiar with. Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Kolkata all have major hospitals.

5. What support does the hospital offer international patients?

Many large hospitals have an international patient desk. Ask about interpreters, help with visa letters and dietary needs.

6. What will it cost, all in?

Compare the full package, not just the procedure price: hospital stay, tests, medicines, the room category, stay for your family and follow-up. The best choice is the one that gives you the right care at a cost you can manage. Remember that any estimate may change if your treatment plan changes.
